It’s that time of year where it seems everyone is gearing up for family photos and imagining the perfect ensemble that seems effortless yet looks flawless and relaxed. As you’re shopping your closet or the pre-holiday sales here’s a little inspiration to take you from here to there. I always suggest to clients they consider a color palette and range of tones that they like..something they feel comfortable in and that fits the mood of the season. It’s great to look and feel at home in your natural surroundings. Just because it’s the holiday, you don’t have to don a cap and bring out the jingle bells. Sometimes, less, is indeed, more.

Rather than trying to created a matched look, I recommend a range of tones that complement one another harmoniously. If you’re a couple complementary shades look beautiful. If you’re a family you have broader palette from which to choose. The season of 2017-18 is bring in a range of beautiful rich tones and subtle muted shades with mauves, plums, deep aubergine, burgundy as well as a rick subdued palette of ochre, rust, chocolate, olive & celadon. You will see many deep shades of denim and various hues in the indigo family as textured and coated denim, taking on a dressier appearance, blend well with the rest of the palette.

Shapes that both fit and flare while highlighting your shape flatter. Always avoid those wardrobe pieces that are difficult to move, sit or bend in, especially overly snug, too high, too low, or otherwise awkward. You will know when the outfit feels just right. The most important thing you can wear at your session is your personality but feeling comfortable, stylish and together as a couple or a family sets the mood and makes you feel at ease. Whatever the case, don’t let the wardrobe become a thing and create havoc with your family. It’s important up to a point but know when to let it go…if it becomes a struggle.

While your attire is important, and at best, complements your visage, your connection, interactions and relationship are what makes a session so fun and memorable. Set up a fun plan, whether it’s an a.m. picnic on the beach or a post-shoot brunch, create a fun vibe to set the tone. Your partner and your family will thank you for making the holiday session something fun and light.
