It’s that time of year where it seems everyone is gearing up for family photos and imagining the perfect ensemble that seems effortless yet looks flawless and relaxed. As you’re shopping your closet or the pre-holiday sales here’s a little inspiration to take you from here to there. I always suggest to clients they consider a color palette and range of tones that they like..something they feel comfortable in and that fits the mood of the season. It’s great to look and feel at home in your natural surroundings. Just because it’s the holiday, you don’t have to don a cap and bring out the jingle bells. Sometimes, less, is indeed, more.
Rather than trying to created a matched look, I recommend a range of tones that complement one another harmoniously. If you’re a couple complementary shades look beautiful. If you’re a family you have broader palette from which to choose. The season of 2017-18 is bring in a range of beautiful rich tones and subtle muted shades with mauves, plums, deep aubergine, burgundy as well as a rick subdued palette of ochre, rust, chocolate, olive & celadon. You will see many deep shades of denim and various hues in the indigo family as textured and coated denim, taking on a dressier appearance, blend well with the rest of the palette.
Shapes that both fit and flare while highlighting your shape flatter. Always avoid those wardrobe pieces that are difficult to move, sit or bend in, especially overly snug, too high, too low, or otherwise awkward. You will know when the outfit feels just right. The most important thing you can wear at your session is your personality but feeling comfortable, stylish and together as a couple or a family sets the mood and makes you feel at ease. Whatever the case, don’t let the wardrobe become a thing and create havoc with your family. It’s important up to a point but know when to let it go…if it becomes a struggle.
While your attire is important, and at best, complements your visage, your connection, interactions and relationship are what makes a session so fun and memorable. Set up a fun plan, whether it’s an a.m. picnic on the beach or a post-shoot brunch, create a fun vibe to set the tone. Your partner and your family will thank you for making the holiday session something fun and light.
More TIPS for guys, TIPS for girls coming tomorrow. We will fill the week with wardrobe inspiration to keep you looking your finest at your shoot.

There is no shortage of amazing places with beautiful scenery in Orange County, California especially when it comes to photography sessions. While I’ve been living and working in Orange County and photographing professionally since 1998, I’ve been asked for location inspiration time and again. I’ve put together a list with photos for clients. We location scout for clients specific to each job to find something unique. Below you will find some of my favorites over the years with photos we’ve captured.
The Montage Resort in Laguna Beach is by far one of my favorites. I’ve had the privilege of capturing surprise engagements, family sessions and seniors on the property and on the beach. Not to mention it’s a delightful spot for a post shoot cocktail on the terrace or a romantic dinner to kick off an engagement weekend. Families love it because it captures the spirit of coastal California with it’s native landscaping, beautiful grounds, natural arches, and spectacular 180 degree views. It’s a rare gem along the coast and the staff and service there happen to be top notch. Last year I was able to tell the story of helping to plan, scout and figure out the logistics for a surprise romantic engagement at the Montage Resort in Laguna Beach. This included giving the groom cues as to great locations and getting the high sign when David was about to pop the question, asking Aza to marry him. When I started in 2001 one of my first sessions with Tina & Wes was a surprise, hiding the champagne in my camera bag, and these are by far some of my absolute favorite times. Nothing compares to the joy in those moments when a couple decides to begin the rest of forever.
Laguna Beach holds a special place in my heart since I was a kid and there are a couple other favorite beaches that I feel are ideal with their beautiful texture and color, great light and spectacular surroundings. Table Rock Beach is a hidden south Laguna beach which is a little tricky to access but so worth it. There are stairs. And a lot of them. Parking is scarce. But it’s a stunning view and really special place that our couples love.
Wood’s Cove is another beach which happens to be my old neighborhood and I have a favorite park in the area ideal for a romantic setting. The rock formations, crashing waves and colors of nature and the sunset and sky make for an unbelievable backdrop that just sets the tone for a great shoot. Parking can be a little challenging but a little extra time makes this so worthwhile. We’ve done weddings and engagements as well as family and kids sessions here. Crescent Bay is a great spot for a small inimate wedding or an engagement session. You can see more of Crescent Bay on our gallery: http://www.studiocarolinephoto.com.
We’d be glad to help you learn more about appropriate permits and requirements to make your shoot amazing. In order to have a great session, a little planning and working with a professional team will help make your session’s scenery amazing. Click here to learn more and contact us about booking.
Huntington Beach Pier. Whether you grew up in Huntington Beach or are visiting, there is something really special and unique about pier architecture. It’s those strong verticals, the cool colors of the greys against the striking SoCal sunsets, the perfectly colored sky and the beautiful corner of shade under the pier…I think it brings out a whimsy and wonder even in big kids and there’s something so incredible flirty and fun about walking along the pier all the way to the end…getting a shake at Ruby’s and finding a special romantic place to build into your shoot session organically. It makes the experience memorable and special and repeat visits over the years even more so. Downtown Huntington Beach has great texture and color In the area and great dining for brunch after your shoot.
While we adore the beach, sometimes it’s good to mix it up. While I’m a rare mix of California native with a good dose of Texas Girl (DFW to be exact) mixed in with 8 adventurous years in NYC around film school and after, I love to shoot in the rustic natural settings you can find a little more off the beaten path…here’s a feature of just a few. I am always surprised to find just how cool and country some of Souther California is. We have cowboys here too and you can find some great rustic windmills, big old trees, and fields of grain that are really magical for a couple or family session. A couple of our favorite spots are …in San Juan Capistrano where we did this Cool as Country session for the Kelly Brothers and family.
We also love Black Starr Canyon located out toward Silverado as well as some of the beautiful rustic trees and streams that make a great setting for an afternoon picnic and fun with your favorite blanket buddy 🙂
Dog Beach is HB is a blast and we’ve had an awesome time capturing couples with their favorite family members. We love shooting pups on the sand and at dog beach. We have even had a few couples bring their pups to their session. Include bull terrier shot and also pups w girl
Newport Beach is not to be missed with great spots along Balboa Island, nothing says romantic date night like riding the ferry, stopping for a frozen banana or a Balboa Bar at Dad’s or Sugar & Spice, and a session by the beach. We love capturing cool couples in Corona Del Mar overlooking the beauty of the harbor near Inspiration Point. The beaches of Little and Big Corona Del Mar are beautiful and get very busy. It’s important to check on permits here and be sure you’re all set for your session.
If you love architecture and more modern contemporary lines the Newport Beach Civic Plaza has amazing architectural details as well as really witty contemporary art in public spaces that’s not to be missed. You will find fashion shoots and beach buddies here too because it’s near the lovely NB Dog Park located at the back end of the plaza. People drive by this gem all the time and don’t really realize there’s so much coolness right there. The views at the top of the infinity bridge are not to be missed especial on a sunset walk with your bestie.
If that inspired you to make it happen, give us a call or drop us a note because we love to collaborate with amazing couples and fun families to capture images that are uniquely you in places that celebrate live in our beautiful backyard. Fall holds spectacular sunsets and it’s a perfect time for engagement sessions, family and children’s photography. Happy Location Hunting and here’s to an awesome session!

Wedding Photography 101: What goes into wedding day photography coverage?
Your wedding day is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Our Designer Wedding Collections at Studio Caroline Photography are designed to be all inclusive which makes life easier for your planning and it guarantees that you’ll have most everything included in your day and your budget in advance of the wedding, so you can enjoy your wedding with ease and no unexpected surprises! We believe no one wants to shop, fall in love, and be surprised later by a bevy of add on charges. Our photography services cater to the discerning couple that understands the value of hiring experienced professionals with service and skills to match. We will help you take care of everything from location scouting, planning your photography session, wardrobe and styling consultations down to the last details of your big day by helping develop a timeline or working closely with your coordinator to make sure your day goes smoothly and according to plan. The other half that clients love is that because your album design and post production are included in the package, you’re good to go once the wedding is complete. Enjoy your honeymoon, while we handle the rest. Of course we will share some highlights while you’re on your honeymoon so you can announce your recent nuptials to everyone you love. The post production work includes your RAW file processing, professional editing, color corrections, enhancements, professional design of your proofs and album so that you don’t leave anything to chance! Our goal is to make your day unforgettable and include all that you’ll require up front so there’s very little to do after the wedding. That being said, the collections offer the best pricing because we’ve bundled what works based on years of experience. Some couples do fall in love with so many beautiful images that they opt to create a larger album or a multi-album set rather than what was included. If you do, we will be glad to design it. We love taking care of our clients and sharing images over champagne to revisit the moment or in whatever digital fashion is most friendly to you and your family. We’ll even think of things you’ve forgotten! Here’s a more detailed breakdown of how it all comes together.
An Average 6-10 hour Wedding Day requires approximately 60-140 hours of studio time, planning & meeting time, post-production and attention to deliver the caliber of images you have seen samples of in person and in our online galleries. There are several phases in the photography production process that go into your collection for your big day, broken down into the following phases for weddings from small to large:
The year before the wedding, the process begins with pre-event emails, calls and web meetings ( you will find a set number in each collection.) Those communications are important in the meetings that follow:
- Pre-event Planning Meeting
- Creating a Custom Timeline Draft & Final to be used at your
Venue Walkthrough at the time of day for portrait planning & ceremony lighting to make the most of your day & provide an optional venue diagram
- Working with your venue coordinator and/or video to be sure electrical is provided and that all set ups for audio visual needs will be provided and tested
- Location scouting for engagements, boudoir, wedding portraiture, day-after photography and rehearsal coverage if you opt to include it
- Collaborating with vendors from your planner to video, to DJ to venue to ensure every detail is incorporated into the plan and timeline.
Your engagement is this amazing special time. We love getting to know you and learning about who you are as a couple. We get a feel for the type of photography, environment and posing/interactions will work to create great portraits. We will work with you to coordinate the engagement session planning, scheduling, location scouting, wardrobe consultation for 2-5 looks, coaching on posing, clothes, hair and makeup and styling to make you comfortable in front of the camera and at ease on your wedding day! This is a great opportunity for us to build rapport & help you look your very best since most people aren’t professional models nor are they accustomed to be photographed. While selfies are such a thing, we will give you some great tips that help you look your very best and make it fun along the way. For couples who opt out of the E-session(we hope you won’t but if you must), not to worry! We have a posing guide available to share. It helps you look your best and be camera ready. Certain poses and positioning can make the difference in adding/subtracting 5-10+ pounds. We pay special attention to formal attire, accessories, and styling to insure magazine worthy images while you are being your most authentic self! Optional couture bridal or boudoir/glamour session or post wedding couple’s fashion session may be added.

So, every summer people have a little down time, they take time off, recharge personally to get refreshed. They spend time in beautiful places, get a tan & come back to life and work anew. Every year your personal brand, social media headshots and image online can use the same reassess, recharge, refresh and renew. Here are some ideas and suggestions we put together regarding business branded headshots. While the info is geared toward the businesses community, I think it’s important to note that your best image is the one of your authentic self. We will go into that further in the next post with a Mad Libs style branding manifesto. Because people spend so much time connecting through social media, your image and video should shine and let others get to know you and feel like they have some insight to want to know more or do business with you. Warm, friendly, approachable, authority, in-the-know, stylish, reputable, on-trend, the very best….all things many of us want to convey.
Check out the info below and let me know more. I will also be doing a story focused on creative and non-traditional businesses. Not to say you should ever be boring. These guidelines work and make people look sharp. P.S. Use sunscreen. Not only because it will result in a gorgeous even tan but because nobody wants to look like a negative in their photos. We’ll be following up with some awesome skin care how-to’s to prep for great photos before and after that awesome vacation you’re about to have. Here’s to a brand new refresh this summer for you and your images!
I talk to people all the time who I photograph and while they want to look nice being photographed…sometimes people put the what to wear as the last item on the list.
Here’s why you shouldn’t:
If you want to feel your best at your photo session, your wardrobe conveys a lot about you, your style and how you want to be perceived. Not to mention when you “feel” good, you look good. That shows in your photographs.
You don’t have to have tons of wardrobe options or new expensive buys to make a session great. 3-5 well chosen outfits are ideal. Often clothes don’t photograph the way you thing they will, so having options is good. You might be surprised at one piece you loved isn’t as great as the one you thought was just okay. Some tones make your skin look great; others do not.
Less is more but accessories count. Think through your outfit from top to toes. Even at the beach (many barefoot photos are fun!) but you may want cute sandals that flatter when we’re not on the sand. Having great accessories that you love or reflect your style is key for ladies and gents to elevate your session from good to great.
Color keying wardrobe and tones appropriate to the style of shoot are “KEY!” What does it mean to color key? Look at your shoot environment or background, say the beach, select a color that’s harmonious and a complementary color that pops a little. 2 colors in the same family and possibly a 3rd or an accent, keep your look stylish, simple and clean so the focus remains on you.
Does your outfit suit the shoot environment and movement? It’s important to ask will your wardrobe look great in the environment and work to sit, stand, recline where you are. Will it make you look great and allow you to shine through. Skinny jeans are still totally on trend but let me just say – sometimes they are not flattering unless you dig the Bieber lost my crotch look. You know what I’m saying. Style is important but style should be somewhat timeless…Solid tones and occasional prints but solids tend to flatter and not distract. You want to wear flattering tones, and not something garish or merely fashion forward at the moment. This doesn’t mean boring…it can be beautiful and move with you and be well accessorized. Also reds can be powerful but also overpowering. We suggest snapping a few phone photos and sharing. We’ll help you or suggest a stylist to complete the look.
Partnering looks to perfection without looking like “Garanimals”. If you’re doing an engagement session, you want to choose coordinated looks with your partner but not necessarily be matchy-matchy. If it’s a family session, matching shirts isn’t always so great…maybe subtle tonal variations or selecting something unique to each family member but that looks cohesive as a styled group. Even looking at complimentary colored wardrobes on Pinterest like this is a great idea. Check out some great couples’ style on Pinterest. Fun family wardrobe inspiration here. We’re here to help!
If you’re stumped for what to wear, here are a few ideas, especially for springtime sessions with your beau. We offer a custom wardrobe consultation for all our sessions so you look and feel amazing.
